Portugal, a land of kindness and beauty – Part 1- Porto

Two years ago, I went to Portugal with a friend of mine. It is a really good memory and I took a lot of pictures during our stay. Portugal is such a beautiful country !

Why am I doing a post about Portugal? Because a few days ago,  I read in the news that a great part of their forest burned, it is a really sad news! Thus, I wanted to share with the beautiful landscapes that I have taken in pictures.

When I was there, we travelled through Portugal during a fortnight. It was a pleasure to share this adventure with one of my best friend. Our first stop was Porto. Porto is the second biggest city in Portugal (just after Lisboa). The city is located at the mouthpiece of Douro in the North of Portugal.  Porto has a nickname which is Cidade Invicta (« undefeated city ») and Capital do Norte (North Capital). She gave her name to the country.

This city is well-known for its wine :

But the city is also well-known for its famous caves. It was impossible for us not to visit the caves and taste the tawny porto!

VLUU L100, M100 / Samsung L100, M100“Sandeman” caves,  according to me the best Porto (Vinho do Porto) ever! I know, the picture is lop-sided but I was not drunk….not yet! Maybe the sangria we drank during our meal at noon is responsible. You must know that  the temperature was really high (+40 ° C!).

The city is also well-known for the azulejos (painted ceramic tilework). This is a typical aspect of Portuguese culture, you can find them when you’re loitering in the city (churches, palaces, ect.). You just have to look around !

The city is such a beauty ! You can see the wine boats floating on the Douro River, the colourful houses embellished with the glowing sun and so on …

The food is also one of the asset of the country. You can taste food such as pastel de nata (it’s a light flaky pastry with egg cream filling), bolo de arroz (cake with rice), bifana (sandwich with pork, marinade and piri piri sauce) or chanfana (goat or lamb stew with red wine and bay leaves). And of course, the famous bacahlau (codfish).

You can also see famous bridges in Porto. Especially, two! The first one because it has been made by Gustave Eiffel, the Maria Pia Bridge and the secon one that you can below is the Dom-Luis bridge (El Ponte Dom- Luis). A third one is Arrabida bridge (Ponte da Arrábida).

To conclude, Porto is a beautiful city with narrow streets , colourful houses. You can find nice shops in every corner. In summer, it is just perfect, ther are lot of markets where you can buy fruits and vegetable, craft (embroidery, azulejos, jewels, and so on).

Each house is being distinguished by its beautiful facade, painted with bright colours. The view is simply astonishing! There is a real cheerfulness here!

Thus, I hope that small extract of my trip arouses your interest. Next week, our second stop will be in Lisboa!
